EDITOR: Never having been an ardent supporter of the military industrial complex or a member of the armed forces, I approached my participation in the U.S. Marine Corps birthday celebration with some skepticism.

EDITOR: Forgotten Felines would like to thank the Marathon Publix for allowing us to place a donation bin in its store. The donations received from our caring community have helped feed approximately 500 Middle Keys cats daily.

EDITOR: On Nov. 19, we celebrated the swearing in of our new county commissioners. Attendees were jubilant and our commissioners respectful of our concerns. There was an atmosphere of civic cooperation, not authoritative confrontation.

Billboard ruins scenery
To the editor: I am outraged that the Florida Department of Transportation would allow all those beautiful trees to be cut down in the median at mile marker 102, so they don’t block the view of that horrific billboard.

No bailouts for failures
EDITOR: Well, now that we've got the best government that money could buy, we are going to see how we spend money that we don't have. Never mind the national debt or the trade deficit or the credit card debt; we've got bailouts to consider. And in doing so, we have to figure out what all this debt is going to cost us, since we have to pay it.

Now's the time for all to support the mayor
EDITOR: We now have a new county mayor and mayor pro tem, George Neugent and Sylvia Murphy, respectively. I read a lot of descriptions of the mayor's job as being mostly ceremonial or symbolic. However, it's more than the first description, though there is ceremony enough that goes with the position. As for the second descriptive word, the symbolism is important symbolism, encompassing an important statement.

Ultimately, debtor nation, not Wall Street, is to blame
EDITOR: The United States today finds itself in a very difficult financial position. A significant factor in getting to where we are now has arisen from the fact that Americans no longer save very much of their income.
