Florida Keys swimmer Mhyria Miller turned in the strongest all-around meet of her college career at last week's prestigious U.S. Open Swim Meet in Minnesota. Miller scored a second place in the 400-meter medley relay with her Athens Bulldog Swim Club teammates.
In her signature breaststroke events, Miller placed fourth in the championship final of the 100 meters, and posted the fifth fastest time in the 200 meters.
The U.S. Open attracted many of the nation's top swimmers who did not get a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
Now entering her senior year at the University of Georgia, Miller opened her Open competition by taking more than a second off her qualifying time set at the U.S. Olympic Trials.
She swam a 1-minute, 9.96-second time in the preliminaries, earning a spot in the championship final. Miller then cut even more time, swimming a 1:09.53 to finish with a strong fourth place. The winner swam a 1:08.61.
In the 200 meter breaststroke, usually considered Miller's best event, she placed 14th (2:34.72) in the preliminaries.
That put her in the B Final, a race she won with a 2:31.73 clocking, giving her ninth place overall. If Miller had competed in the championship, her time would have put her in fifth place.
The Athens Bulldogs capped the meet Friday by taking second place in the 4x100-meter medley race, Miller swimming the breaststroke in the second leg.
After the Open, Miller returned to her family's Lower Keys home for a brief break.
